The Nyanga area has long been regarded as a place of great natural beauty and Zimbabwe's highest peak, Mount Inyangani, provides the stunning backdrop to Troutbeck Resort, nestled in the Eastern Highlands of the country. With soaring peaks and gentle moorlands, areas of magnificent indigenous forest, crystal-clear trout streams and cascading waterfalls the scenery is more akin to the misty, romantic Scottish Highlands than sub-tropical Zimbabwe.
Built by Major Macilthwaite, a keen trout fisherman, in 1951 Troutbeck Resort comprises a country hotel (previously known as Troutbeck Inn) and adjacent time share chalets. It has a distinct mountain resort feel with a 9 hole golf course, bowling greens, volleyball, horse riding, tennis and squash courts, swimming pool, canoeing, children's playground and a deep blue trout lake.
Troutbeck has been well maintained and visitors seeking to explore the scenic beauty off Nyanga are warmly welcomed. Thankfully some things never change and the fire in the deep set fireplace in the entrance hall, which has been burning since 01 March 1951, still burns bright thus embodying the spirit of Troutbeck and all it stands for.
Throughout this country style hostelry a sense of history prevails. Over the years the public areas have been modernised but still bear the features of a cosy rather old fashioned 1950's mountain inn. There is a billiards room with full size tables and a gentleman's club feel and in the evening the Hare and Hound bar has always been a popular meeting place. Curl up in the lounge with a good book and enjoy home-baked scones with locally grown tea on the sunny terrace with panoramic views. Bedrooms are spacious with great family options: the lake view rooms have the better view, although the garden rooms do have an edge on size. The fireplaces in each room are a nice feature, despite having been replaced by under floor heating which is most welcome on a cool misty evening.
In addition to all the activities available within the grounds of Troutbeck Resort there are some wonderful scenic drives for which the Nyanga area is famous for. A visit to Troutbeck Resort can be as actively invigorating or as restful as you make it.
